Caney Bank Robbery from newspaper, "The Indian Citizen = Democrat", Atoka, Oklahoma. Thursday, June 27, 1929 :

BANDITS LOOT CANEY BANK ON THURSDAY LAST
Part Of Loot Later Recovered By Officers; Three Held In County Jail As Result

Three suspects, all residents of Atoka county, are held in the Atoka jail as a result of the robbery of the Bank of Caney on Thursday morning last at about 10 o’clock. Riding into town on horseback as farmers frequently do, the men reined their horses in behind the bank, looted the bank of the sum of $2,256.85, forced C.H. Brown, the cashier, his daughter, Miss Virginia and J.W. Trimble, retired merchant who happened to be present into the vault, but did not turn the combination, mounted their horses and rode away. Scarcely had the bandits left the building when the alarm was sounded and a posse of citizens formed to pursue the fleeing bandits.
The sheriff’s office was notified at once and Sheriff Maxwell and all deputies immediately took to the field, assisted by officers from Bryan and Johnston counties, who volunteered their assistance. The bandits took a northeastern course from Caney and were fired upon at the county bridge on Clear Boggy about two miles east by Ralph Mitchell. $280 in gold was picked up near the C.H. Noak farm a short distance further on, and $531 in silver and currency was found a mile north and ½ mile east of the place where the gold was found. The balance of the loot has not been recovered; however the bank carried burglar insurance, consequently has suffered no loss from the affair.
Sheriff Maxwell has arrested the following citizens of the Bentley community and is now holding them in the county jail in connection with the matter:
E.R. Callicoat
George Coldiron
"Red" Hickman
Callicoat was arrested in Caney immediately after the robbery, at first on suspicion but later developments have greatly strengthened case against him it is said. The other two were arrested later and it is reported the Coldiron has been positively identified by Caney citizens as one of the bandits. Callicoat was not present at the actual robbery but the officers feel sure they will be able to connect him with the affair.
Hickman has not yet been positively identified but the officers are of the opinion that they will be able to show that he also was connected with the affair.
Our officers deserve to be congratulated upon the skillful manner in which the affair has been handled.

Tales of the Caney Bank Robbery -

- From Carl Callicoat :
There were 4 men originally : George Coaliron, Irvin (George Coaliron's Brother-In-Law), Eathern Callicoat, Jess Lethrum. When they were getting drunk before the job, Jess Luthrum backed out on them.

- From Opal Peeler :
The Caney bank was robbed around 1931. After the robbery George Coaliron stopped by her house (Tom wasn't there), could see that she was scared, and left the house leaving behind a pool of blood. Ethel Coaliron, George's wife, picked the bullets out of him. They buried the money and covered it with a washtub. Eathern came to Ethel and told her that George wanted them to dig up the money and bail him out. After they dug up the money it became apparent that Eathern had no intention of bailing out George. Ethel and Eathern ran off together abandoning Ethel's 2 children with Tom Peeler's aunt and uncle. When George Coaliron got out of prison he came to Ed Peeler (Tom's brother) and asked where Ethel and Eathern was. Ed told him that he didn't know where Ethel and Eathern were, but that he did know where His children were. He took George to get his children from his aunt and uncle's house. George got out of prison around 1950. (Eathern may have already been dead)
